In some cases, crowding in the upper arch may be caused by a lack of growth in width of the upper jaw. This can cause cross bites and is often accompanied by a narrow appearance to the upper teeth. In selected cases, expansion of the upper jaw and upper arch may be appropriate using fixed expansion devices or removable plates. Such treatment can create additional space in the upper arch that can be used to alleviate crowding without the need for extraction of teeth.
